USEFUL BLADDER AND BOWEL ORGANISATIONS

The following continence support organisations exist to support people with bladder and bowel problems.

INCONTACT – www.incontact.org

Incontact is a national charity for people affected by bladder and bowel problems. They provide support and information and represent the interests of people with continence problems.  Incontact’s vision is a future where incontinence is no longer taboo, where people with bladder and bowel problems have free access to information and support and to the treatments, products and services they need.

Uniquely, Incontact is run by and for consumers. The management committee is made up of consumers, informal carers and healthcare professionals. They offer support and information to service users, their carers and the health professionals who provide advice and treatment.

A central function of Incontact is to raise awareness amongst the public and health professionals of these common continence problems, and the range of treatment and management options available. They aim to break down the stigma that still surrounds incontinence

ENURESIS – www.enuresis.org.uk

Education and Resources for Improving Childhood Continence [ERIC] is a national registered charity [1002424] which provides advice and information to younger children, teenagers, parents and professionals on the common and stressful condition of nocturnal enuresis or bedwetting. ERIC also offers advice on childhood day-time wetting and soiling. Established in 1988, it is the only organisation of its kind in the UK - and the first in the world.

ERIC exists to reduce the incidence of bedwetting, day-time wetting and associated conditions and the suffering it causes to children and young people in the UK.

THE CONTINENCE FOUNDATION – www.continence-foundation.org.uk

The Continence Foundation is a support organisation to both healthcare professionals and individuals with bladder and bowel problems.

The Continence Foundation is not only available to people who would call themselves ‘incontinent’.  Leakage from the bladder is all too common, especially if you laugh, sneeze or exercise (stress incontinence).  Less common is leakage from the bowel.  But other problems are:
· needing often to hurry to the toilet to empty your bladder · needing to empty your bladder very many times a day · having to get up several times a night to go · wetting the bed in your sleep - can happen to people of all ages, not only children · your bladder does not empty completely · you need adaptations to your home or your clothes to make going to the toilet easier · you have a learning difficulty or memory problems that affect your ability to use the toilet
